Pourquoi le thé de chanvre est la nouvelle tendance?

A wide variety of hemp food products is offered on the market. One of those products is hemp tea also known as CBD tea. This type of tea contains cannabidiol extract that has many beneficial health effects.  Contrary to popular belief, this form of cannabidiol is non-intoxicating and non-psychoactive.

How to distinguish hemp from marijuana?

Many people confuse marijuana with industrial hemp products.

Both marijuana and hemp products come from the same plant knows as Cannabis Sativa.

First of all, there is a difference in appearance. The marijuana parts of the cannabis plant include the resin, buds, and leaves. Whereas the hemp part of the cannabis plant includes the sterilized seeds and stalks, the remainder of the plant. [1]

Secondly the chemical content is different. The marijuana part of the cannabis plant contains most of the tetrahydrocannabinols (THC), which is the hallucinogenic part of the cannabis plan [1]. Especially the flowers of the female plants excrete a cannabinoid-rich resin – named hashish. It has THC-content of 0.5-7%, while the inflorescences stuck together with resin are commonly called marihuana and have THC-content 5-20%. [2]

On the other hand, hemp generally contains little Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana, and plants that contain less than 0.3% THC (dry weight) in their inflorescences are considered hemp [3].

In Europe, hemp cultivars legally allowed for production may not exceed 0.2% THC on a dry weight basis [4]. Whereas THC in marijuana varieties can range from 1% to 20% or more [2]. In fact several countries have ongoing breeding programs to develop high-yielding, low-THC varieties of hemp plant.

What is CBD?

Cannabis plant contains cannabidiol known widely as CBD. It is nonintoxicating, but exerts a number of beneficial pharmacological effects. Most studies on CBD were performed for treatment of epilepsy and psychotic disorders. Here, the most commonly reported side effects were tiredness, diarrhea, and changes of appetite/weight. In comparison with other drugs, used for the treatment of these medical conditions, CBD has a better side effect profile. [5].

Current interest in hemp products

Interest in hemp in the United States resurfaced largely from the mid-1990s following European and Canadian decisions to allow hemp production. Many countries began creating opportunities for hemp research and production.

The international treaties require that the entire plant is controlled under national drug laws, although in European countries there may be exceptions for plants which have a THC content not exceeding 0.2 %, if grown for fibre. [6]

Traits of interest for hemp plantation include: high primary fiber yield for use as pulp, extra-fine fibers for textiles, increased cellulose content for biofuel, production of cannabidiols (also oil) and other compounds of nutritional or medicinal interest (also hemp tea) [2]. We illustrate the potential use of hemp below:

Is hemp tea safe?

Many of us may still be concerned about the safety of such products like hemp tea. Various statistics prove that between 1998 and 2003 a significant linear decrease in the THC concentrations for the product groups hemp tea and hemp oil was observed. Increase of controls on manufacturers and EU regulations have obviously led to a significant decline of THC concentrations in hemp food products. “The maximum THC content in current purchasable hemp food products is ten to a hundred-fold lower than those found in the studies of the 1990s.” [7] Therefore current levels of THC in hemp derived products like hemp tea do not cause regulatory or health concern anymore.

In a recent study [8] participants consumed 6 cups (0.2 l) of hemp tea (0.23 mg/kg THC) over a duration of 2 hours. Results showed no THC metabolites were found in the urine of six probands using an immunochemical standard screening method.

This confirms previous results of other working groups that excessive consume of currently available hemp food products (e.g. hemp tea) does not cause positive urinalyses. Nowadays one can assume that fibre hemp products do not influence forensic-toxicological drug tests, if these products comply with the effective limits.

What are hemp tea benefits?

Main benefits of CBD tea are: elevating mood, treatment of epilepsy, provide soulagement des difficultés de sommeil occasionnelles. Le thé de chanvre peut également aider à maintenir la santé du système immunitaire, soutenir le cartilage et la fonction articulaire, favoriser la relaxation et aider à maintenir la fonction cardiovasculaire et un système circulatoire sain.
